THE EXTRA PERKS OF BEING ON CALL FOR THE EMERGENCY ROOM

I have been in private practice for over 13 years, and I still take emergency room call.  Why do I still do it?  Well, there is the additional income, which helps, especially in this economy.  But that is not the main reason.  There are many times I have to operate either late at night or early morning on a patient which I know I am not going to receive any payment.  So why do I still do it?  Well, I guess for the same reason Michael Phelps swam in the London Olympics, even though he did not have to ( after the 2008 Olympics he had won 14 gold medals, which is five more than any other athlete, and he won 8 gold medals in 2008, beating Mark Spitz seemingly unbreakable record).  He did it, because he had fun when he competed.  I have fun when I am operating, regardless of the time of the day.  I go into a “zone” which is hard to explain.

Being on call sometimes has additional perks not related to medicine.  Case in point, this Friday I was in the Doctor’s Lounge at St. Joseph’s Hospital, waiting for my case to start.  As I was channel surfing, I saw a live concert by Emeli Sande’ on PBS.  If you are a regular blog reader, here is my pitch again:  please support your local public television and radio!

The official video for this song has over 55 million views, but I prefer this live version which I saw on television, as it really showcases the incredible voice of both singers (Sande’ with Labrinth).

Here are the lyrics and video to this incredible song.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

You tell all the boys “no”
Makes you feel good, yeah
I know you’re out of my league
But that won’t scare me away, oh no
You’ve carried on so long
You couldn’t stop if you tried it
You’ve built your wall so high
That no one could climb it
But I’m gonna try

Would you let me see beneath your beautiful?
Would you let me see beneath your perfect?
Take it off now girl, take it off now girl
‘Cause I wanna see inside
Would you let me see beneath your beautiful, tonight?
Oh, tonight…

You let all the girls go
Makes you feel good, don’t it?
Behind your Broadway show
I heard a boy say, “Please don’t hurt me”
You’ve carried on so long
You couldn’t stop if you tried it (oh no, no no, yeah)
You’ve built your wall so high
That no one could climb it
But I’m gonna try

Would you let me, see beneath your beautiful?
Would you let me, see beneath your perfect?
Take it off now boy, take it off now boy,
I wanna see inside
Would you let me see beneath your beautiful, tonight?

(Yeah, yeah)
Oh, tonight (yeah, yeah, c’mon, yeah, tonight)
(C’mon listen, say) Ah
(So c’mon with me now)

I’m gonna climb on top your ivory tower
I’ll hold your hand, and then we’ll jump right out
We’ll be falling, falling, but that’s okay
‘Cause I’ll be right here
I just wanna know

Would you let me see beneath your beautiful?
Would you let me see beneath your perfect?
Take it off now boy/girl, take it off now boy/girl
‘Cause I wanna see inside
Would you let…

C’mon now, I said would you let (oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
See beneath your beautiful (C’mon, oh tonight)
I said, “We ain’t perfect, we ain’t perfect, no”
Would you let…
See beneath your beautiful, tonight
(Oh tonight…)
