Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the United States. Over the past 20 years, techniques for liposuction have improved and so has the results (if the right patient is chosen).
Liposuction is a very popular procedure among men.
Men, unlike women, tend to store excess fat inside the abdomen, under the abdominal skin and especially the love handles (I call love handles the curse of men!). Women tend to store fat in their hips and legs. That is why sometimes men are called “spiders” and women “pears” when it comes to where the fat is stored.
In some cases, the excess abdominal fat is exclusively stored under the abdominal muscle and is considered intra-abdominal. This patient presents with a protruding abdomen that is tight like a drum with little to no fat which can pinched. Unfortunately, this type of patient is not a candidate for liposuction of the abdominal area. The only solution is weight loss.
If the fat is stored under the skin and above the muscle, liposuction can be performed. Although most men request liposuction of the abdomen and the love handles, other areas such as the neck and male chest (gynecomastia) are also popular. Given the right candidate, the results can be dramatic.
Although not common, I have also performed liposuction of the inner thighs and knees in some men. In the right patient, the result is similar to women and will result in a more toned and slimmer lower extremity.
The recovery is similar for both men and women. I routinely perform liposuction without the use of general anesthesia. The benefit is faster recovery, less anesthesia risk, and lower cost.
Most patients can return to work 2-3 days after the procedure, but must wear a compression garment for 2-4 weeks for optimal result. The final result may take 3-6 months to achieve, depending on the amount of fat removed and patient’s skin tone.
