Gynecomastia, also known as man boobs or moobs (terrible name!) is enlargement of male breast.
In most cases the cause is idiopathic (no obvious cause). However, certain medications such as anabolic steroids and marijuana, to name a few, will make the breast tissue growth excessive. It is also important to rule out hormonal causes of gynecomastia. In rare cases, certain tumors, including testicular cancer, can cause abnormal growth of male breast tissue.
Once all potential causes have been ruled out and treated, the best method of correcting gynecomastia is surgery.
The options are liposuction with or without actual removal of breast tissue. In my experience, in majority of cases, with aggressive but safe removal of fat and some breast tissue with liposuction, I have had no need to perform subcutaneous mastectomy (removal of breast tissue while leaving the skin intact). If the patient has significant breast tissue with loose skin, then breast tissue removal and a breast lift may be required.
After the procedure, it is important for the patient to wear a compression vest to provide constant pressure on the operated area. Typically, the vest is worn for the first 1-2 months, depending on the amount of swelling. It may take up to six months for the final result, but most patients will see a dramatic improvement after the first three months.
