The Price of Plastic Surgery Procrastination

We all procrastinate to some degree – and it’s sometimes a good thing to put off doing something if the time isn’t right. On the other hand, if you’ve been planning to get plastic surgery for years and the time never seems right, there may be an issue.

What are the Downsides of Putting off a Procedure?

Whether it’s breast augmentationrhinoplasty, or any other type of plastic surgery, the main problem with delay is that the time we all have in this life is finite. You’ll have that much less time to enjoy the positive impacts of the procedure after spending too much time worrying about whether or not to have it.

It’s also true that the future is unpredictable. As we write this, at least 700,000 people in Southern California are being directly impacted by ongoing entertainment industry strikes and no settlement is in sight. You may or may not be surprised to learn that plastic surgeons from San Luis Obispo to San Diego are getting the most calls they’ve had in some time as people seek to make the most of the downtime. Even so, the strike won’t last forever and writers, actors, and others may find themselves in a difficult situation if they wait too long and schedule their procedures just as the phone calls start rolling in.

Also, If you’re planning a wedding or other event you want to look good for, it’s crucial to give yourself plenty of time. It can take several weeks to recover from plastic surgery and obtain the full impact of a procedure.

When Does Procrastination Make Sense?

As we mentioned earlier, there are also some good reasons to wait to obtain procedures. Women who are contemplating a tummy tuck or a mommy makeover should wait until after they are done having children. As you might expect, pregnancy and childbirth can undo many of the benefits of a tummy tuck or a breast lift/augmentation. Of course, things happen and patients occasionally decide to have more children for many reasons. This is rarely an insurmountable problem but it will require more surgeries further down the line.

Moving on, plastic surgery is very safe and effective. Nevertheless, it’s still surgery and therefore an important decision. If you are continually unsure about a procedure, there may be good reasons. Consider carefully whether you truly want the surgery and make a final decision. If you’re still on the fence, however, the best thing to do is to schedule a consultation to learn more and make your final decision.

Deciding on a Plastic Surgeon

Whatever you do, once you’ve made up your mind to have a procedure, choose your physician with great care. Make sure they are a board-certified plastic surgeon and look at testimonials, before-and-after images of their past procedures, and any other information you find, to get an idea of what might be possible in your case.

Finally, it’s important to understand that a plastic surgeon is not the same thing as a cosmetic surgeon. Becoming a plastic surgeon requires years of additional training, while essentially, any M.D. is free to call themselves a cosmetic surgeon with little or no additional preparation.
