The breasts are one of the most noticeable features of a woman’s body. However, some women have one breast that is noticeably different in size than the other, which is a condition known as asymmetry. Breast asymmetry is a common condition that often causes women to feel self-conscious about their breasts and lowers their self-esteem. To improve the appearance to the breasts and restore symmetry, women regularly undergo plastic surgery.
Correcting Breast Asymmetry
The breasts can be made more symmetrical by:
- Reshaping or resizing the breasts
- Reducing the size of the areolas
- Repositioning the nipples
Candidates
Individuals best suited for breast asymmetry correction are both physically and emotionally affected by the appearance of their breasts. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, do not smoke, and are realistic about the outcome of their procedure.
Orange County Breast Asymmetry Surgery
During your consultation with Dr. Michael Jazayeri, he will discuss your concerns and examine your breasts to determine the best technique to correct your asymmetry. Surgery to correct breast asymmetry is typically performed on an outpatient basis under either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The amount of time required to complete the procedure depends on the extent of correction needed in the breast area. Depending on the degree of asymmetry, Dr. Jazayeri may use one or more of the following techniques:
Breast Augmentation With Fat Grafting
Excess fat is removed from one area of the body, such as the stomach or hips, using liposuction. The fat cells are then purified and injected into the smaller breast.
Breast Augmentation With Implants
A breast augmentation using either a saline or silicone implant may be performed on either the smaller breast or on both breasts.
Breast Lift
If asymmetry is due to excess sagging, a breast lift can reshape and lift the breast to a more youthful position.
Recovery and Results
When the procedure is complete, bandages will be applied to the incision sites, and a compression garment may be worn to aid in reducing swelling. Since you will still be under the effects of anesthesia, you will need someone to pick you up and drive you home from the facility. Moderate pain and discomfort may exist during the first few days, but prescribed medication can be taken to alleviate these symptoms. Even though downtime will be needed to make a full recovery, most patients are able to return to work and attend social events within one to two weeks after surgery.
The final results may not be apparent for many weeks, but it is important to maintain a healthy weight to ensure long-lasting results. Most women are very satisfied with their results and have an improved sense of self-confidence.
