BREAST AUGMENTATION IN THIN PATIENT
Breast augmentation in the thin patient is always challenging. The patient with thin skin is typically very slim, which means narrow chest and limited amount of skin for expansion. The hardest part, especially in the young patient, is to convince the patient to choose the smallest implant with the least amount of projection. This will have the highest chance of achieving a natural result.
As the skin stretches over time, it may be possible to choose an implant with a higher profile, but it will take at least one year for the skin to fully stretch and “settle in”. Since the skin envelope is thin, my recommendation is to choose silicone implant as it will feel and behave much more like breast tissue than saline filled implant. Unfortunately, the FDA has not approved the use of silicone breast implant in patients younger than 22 years of age.
The below patient who is very tall and slender, has a thin skin envelope and narrow chest wall, had 255cc low profile saline implants placed below the muscle. This resulted in a very natural shape.
