If you suffer from the appearance of overly large breasts, then chances are you have some extent of physical and/or emotional pain. To effectively decrease the size of the breasts and get a more proportioned physique, many women choose to undergo breast reduction surgery. Known as “reduction mammaplasty,” Dr. Michael Jazayeri the plastic surgeon in Orange County frequently performs this procedure at his
practice for women of many different age groups.
What a Breast Reduction Improves
Women with overly large breasts commonly complain of the following:
- Sagging, pendulous breasts
- Back, neck, and shoulder pain
- Skin rashes and/or sweating under the breasts
- Restrictions of physical activities
- Embarrassment of the appearance of their breasts
- Loss of confidence
- Clothing that doesn’t fit properly
A breast reduction can safely and effectively improve these problems.
Candidates
Breast reduction surgery is beneficial for women who feel the size of their breasts affect their overall physique and attract unwanted attention. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, at least 18 years of age, and have realistic expectations about the procedure.
Orange County Breast Reduction
This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general or local anesthesia. The time it takes to perform the procedure will depend the on size of the breasts, the amount of sagging that exists, and the technique used. After anesthesia is delivered, Dr. Jazayeri will make the necessary incisions in the breasts to remove any excess skin and tissue. If needed, the nipples may also be resized and/or repositioned. Doctor will then close the incisions with sutures. It is always recommended the removed breast tissue be sent for pathology for examination.
The location of the incisions will depend on the amount of correction needed and the technique used. The most common techniques include:
- Donut: An incision goes around the areola.
- Lollipop: An incision goes around the areola and then vertically from the base of the areola to the breast crease.
- Anchor: An incision goes around the areola, then vertically from the base of the areola to the breast crease, and then horizontally along the breast crease.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Jazayeri will help determine the technique that will best meet your needs and desires.
Recovery and Results
When the breast reduction is complete, bandages will be placed over the incisions and a compression garment will be wrapped around the chest to reduce swelling. Since you will still be under the effects of anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home from the facility. Prescribed medication can be taken to alleviate any discomfort that exists during the first few days. Most patients are able to return to work after about a week of downtime.
Although you will see an immediate improvement in the shape and size of your breasts, it may take three to six months to see the final results of your breast reduction. You may expect your results to last many years as long as you don’t become pregnant and maintain a healthy weight. Most women are much more comfortable and feel a renewed sense of confidence knowing that their breasts are in better proportion with the rest of their body.
