Pubic Lift-A Surgical Treatment for FUPA
FUPA, believe it or not, stands for Fat Upper Pubic Area. I am not sure who first coined this term, but it was written about in the December 2012 edition of Cosmopolitan magazine article.
Instagram has over 20,000 posts on FUPA!
Benefits of Pubic Liposuction Include:
- Safe removal of fat
- Improved health, usually associated with fat loss
- Changes the way you look, and the way others perceive you
- Boost in self-esteem
- Sculpting areas of body that even exercise and diet don’t seem to impact
Assuming other causes have been ruled out (malignancy, full bladder, etc.), the most common cause of FUPA is excess fat and or skin above the pubic area. If excess fat is the only culprit, liposuction can significantly improve the contour by removal of the fat. If skin excess is also present, then a pubic lift is required. This procedure typically requires liposuction and removal of excess skin.
This procedure can be combined with a tummy tuck procedure, but I prefer to stage the surgeries. The rational is that a tummy tuck is pulling the skin down under some tension and a pubic lift is pulling the skin up under some tension. I am concerned about two opposing forces (under some tension) may add up to moderate tension, especially during the healing part which involves swelling of the area. This may result in stretching or thickening of the incision scar.
The procedure is done in our office and requires no general anesthesia. The healing is much quicker than a tummy tuck, but the patient must still refrain from excessive activity for 4-6 weeks.
